Painting and Glazing a Dollar Store Frame

The following post has been brought over from my old blog.

I am planning a cute idea in my head that I need a frame for, and I want the frame red.  So I ran to all a dollar and grabbed a wood frame.  Here is how I painted and glazed it:
What you will need:
  • Frame - You can use any size you want, the size I used was (8x10)
  • Spray Paint - I used a glossy Cherry Red
  • Sandpaper
  • Glaze - I used a black glaze
  • Clean damp towell that you don't mind getting stained
Step 1: Take off the back cardboard piece and glass and paint with your spray paint.  I didn’t prime or anything – just sprayed on two coats.

Once the paint is dry rough up a few edges with your sandpaper.

Do you see that little spot I sanded?

Now comes the glazing, which I know frightens many people away, but it is so cool and easy to learn! If glazing is something you are not sure of don’t let it keep you from doing this project.  It will still look great without glazing.  I just happen to like the look the glaze gives it.  If you want to try glazing it really is not too difficult.
With a black sponge brush wipe on glaze

With a damp towel wipe off glaze.

If there are a couple of places that you think have too much glaze just rewipe with your damp towel.  Now repeat this until you have glaze your whole frame.
So this last picture isn't the best picture.  By this time the sun was high in the sky and everything was just so bright.  You will be able to get a better view the frame next week.  I am excited for the item I am framing and can't wait to share it with you next week.  So stay tuned!

Mini Swag Bags

Please don't forget to enter my Royal Design Studio Giveaway.  It ends today! Giveaway is now closed.

These mini swag bags were so fun and easy to make so I thought I would share the tutorial with you.

When going to Snap I decided very last minute to stay in a hotel with a bunch of other girls and wanted to make up a cute mini swag bag for my roomies.  Since the conference was the very next day it needed to be something I could pull together quick.  These bags turned out so cute and were so quick to make.

I was given this fantastic stencil by Royal Design Studio and one of the flower stencils worked perfect for what I had in mind.

So along with the stencil you will need white paper bags and Tattered Angels Glimmer Mist.  The two colors of Glimmer Mist that I used were Haunted Shadow and Peach Delight.

Now lay your stencil on your bag and spray it with the glimmer mist. I just layed it on the concrete of our driveway - I don't think my husband was too thrilled with that as it left a mark.  But after several rain falls it eventually washed away :)

Place stencil on bag.

Spray with glimmer mist

Remove stencil - Ta Da!  Let dry!  By the way the mist washes very quickly and nicely off the stencil.

This one is sprayed in Peach Delight.

6 Mini swag bags are now all dry.

Add some swag!  I put together an assortment of Making Memories cards/envelopes, paper and rubons.  Then tied them up in a cute tulle bow.

Put your swag in your bag and tie with yellow tulle.
I have to say that I just loved how these turned out and my roomies seemed to like them as well!  I hope this inspires you to create something with a stencil.  It really is simple and easy!

What is your ideal Treat for Mother's Day?

Make sure you take a moment to enter my fabulous Giveaway from Royal Design Studio - I love their stencils so much I wish I could enter! Giveaway is now closed.

What is your ideal Treat for Mother's Day?
Did someone say Treats?  I just love treats and Mother's Day.  For me it is a day of rest, relaxation and indulgence (chocolate must always be included).  I always get a yummy breakfast in the morning, tons of hugs and snuggling from my kids and lots of pampering from my husband.  Usually the whole day is mine.  One year I spent the entire day in bed reading a book.  Another time was spent watching my favorite movies with my kids with several naps.  Other years we have visited with friends and family.  I love that I can pretty much do anything I want on this day and it is something I always look forward to.

This week I was treated to a yummy dinner at California Pizza Kitchen and some goodies from Treat.com - just in time for Mother's Day.  I knew most of the other people at the dinner so it was so much fun.  I was able to hangout with Karina (The Bucket List Girl), Kathy (Danish Mama), Lori (Eclectic Mama), Kaysi (Keeping It Simple), Vanessa (Our Thrifty Ideas), Jessica (One Sweet Appetite) and Carly (Living The Scream).  I had so much fun hanging out with these ladies and the food was so yummy!

We had yummy appetizers, pizza, salad and dessert. This was my first time to California Pizza Kitchen and I really liked it - I will definitely be back!
Garlic Chicken Pizza - Yum!

I think this was a BBQ Chicken salad - I didn't try this one but it looked good.

Butter Cake - Oh my this was good!  I sadly couldn't finish mine - I was so stuffed by dessert time.

A group picture of a few of us (Kaysi, Jessica, Me, Karina, Vanessa)
Karina shared with us all about Treat.com - it was so fun to learn about!  Treat.com is Shutterflys new greeting card site.  I love Shutterfly so I just knew I would like Treat.com You are able to customize your cards and have a printed version to send out.  When I joined, it let me choose people from my Facebook who I wanted to remember to send cards to - and it will keep the reminder for me.  I thought that was pretty cool.  I also want to use Treat.com to print things for my Summer Scraps Etsy shop.  Here are pictures of some of the fun things we received and gives you a good idea of how you can personalize your things -

I love gift bags with fun treats inside!

A variety of goodies for me!

Samples of cards showing how you can personalize with your own pictures.

Cute, fun cards!  The cards are of a really nice quality.
I can't wait to browse around their store and see what other fun things they have.  If you want to connect with Treat.com here are several ways:

I was "treated" by Treat.com to a nice dinner and some fun product.  All opinions are mine.

Bloom where you are planted

A couple weeks before Snap Conference in a chat room I met some great people that work with Royal Design Studio.  I was so excited to find out they were going to Snap and I made it a point to meet with them and even took a class.  The class was fantastic and I learned some great techniques.  I knew from the beginning that I loved their products and I have several of their stencils now to play with.

Last week I was given the opportunity to share a craft on Mom It Forward.  I was so excited for this opportunity and today I want to share the craft I made.  I also have a great giveaway from Royal Design Studio that I will be posting later today - so come back and enter!

Can you believe Mother's Day is on Sunday? My Royal Design Studios stencils were perfect for what I wanted to make my Mom this year.  I love to make handmade gifts for Mother's Day and so I made a few of these stenciled signs.  I also made one to give a lady in my church as a Thank You - she loved it!

How to Make a Stenciled Wood Sign for your Home or Garden

Supplies:

  • Scrap Wood – I used 2×2 wood scraps (7 boards are 15″ and 2 boards are 10″).
  • 14 – 1 1/4″ screws – I predrilled the holes and then put the screws in to make sure the wood did not crack.
  • White paint
  • Royal Design Studio Stencil Large Japanese Flower Garden A
  • Red and orange spray paint
  • Vinyl that says “Bloom where you are planted”
  • Tape
  • Scrap paper

Directions:

Let’s get started!
Cut and sand your wood. Line up the 15-inch wood pieces as shown in the picture below. Screw in the two shorter pieces to add stability (this is the back of your sign).
Flip your sign over and paint the wood white. Let dry.
Once it is dry, tape down your Royal Design Studio stencil on the wood. I placed paper around the edges to make sure excess spray paint didn’t get anywhere else on the wood.
I want my flower to be red with a pop of orange in the middle. So first I used the orange spray paint and I lightly sprayed around the middle section.
Next I used the red spray paint and lightly sprayed over the rest of the stencil. I lost a bit of the orange so I gave the middle a quick spray of orange in the center again.
Then I carefully removed the stencil and immediately washed it to make sure I wouldn’t have a mess later. Let your wood sign dry.
At first I did my vinyl in yellow because I thought it would look really nice with the red and orange. The only problem was the yellow did not show up very well on the white, so I switched to black. My vinyl was created with the Brush Script font (in case you are wondering). Add your vinyl words and you’re done!
I think my mom is going to love it!

I am so glad I had the opportunity to try out one of Royal Design Studios stencils.  Royal Design did provide me with the stencil but all crafting and opinions are my own.
Do you have any great handmade Mother’s Day gift ideas? Please share!

Snap Conference Part 3 Day 2 - Friday

I was planning on posting this recap sooner but life got uber busy :)

So after a somewhat restful night sleep I started my second day at the Snap conference with a Speaker at 9am.  The topic was "You're so Invited".   I enjoyed listening to the speaker but do you know what was better?  Ana White (Wow!) was sitting 2 seats away from me.  I was a little bit star struck - I just love her blog!  She is so cute and sweet by the way!

I took a bunch of classes today -

*Happy Chaos
*Everything you ever wanted to know about Facebook Applications- I learned a lot from this class and am so glad I made it to this class.
*Inside a Thriving Business - I am so glad I took this class.  I found it informative, helpful and fun.  This was one of my favorite classes.
*Basic SEO - Wow!  So much info and I learned so much even though a lot of it was over my head.  The guy who taught this class was pretty funny.

That night Dinner was a buffet style.  There were veges, potatoes, chicken and a chocolate mousse with orange sauce.

After dinner we were able to enjoy the Queen Bee Market - There were so many fun things.  I bought this cute Owl heating bag that you warm up in the microwave - only $5.99 and so cute! This is made by a cute shop called The Salty Bison.

I was really starting to miss my kids tonight :(

That night my roomies and I stayed up till 2:30 in the morning - it was so much fun!
