My super messy Craft Room

Are you ready to see the messiest room in my house??  It is my craft room.  No one call hoarders on me - k??  Why am I sharing these pictures with you?  Maybe I am trying to just keep it real - and maybe this will help keep me accountable to get this room clean this week.  Plus I am on the search for ideas on organizing my craft room - so if you have any I would love for you to share.

With how busy I was during the holidays things just got shoved into my craft room and never really put away.  It looks like a bomb has exploded in there.  When I first moved here the walls were all a dark green, I have repainted them a pretty sage green but this room needs so much more help.

When you first walk in this is what you see

A mess right???

This room does have some potential though - I just need to figure out where to put everything.

Behind the door is this closet space.  I have some wire shelving in there.  I keep scrapbook albums, scrapbook pages, magazines, embellishments and ribbon over here.  I feel like this isn't the best use of this space.

The left corner of the room has my TV, DVD, VHS player, movies, stamps, misc. items that are stored in a big shelf and a paper storage rack.  I would love to have a flat screen TV on the wall to save space there - I need to figure out how to organize the shelving better.

Here is my biggest mess - where I put everything that I need to put away.  There is a table in all of that mess.  This table is where I was hoping to work on my craft projects - kinda impossible right now.

Here is the mess in the right corner of the room.  Another big shelf - the top shelf was for albums, second shelf down for cards, middle shelf for scrapbook stuff, second to bottom shelf embellishments and bottom shelf for sewing materials.  It has become a bit disorganized.

Now here is the one kinda clean spot in my room.  Some shelves and a dresser.  The shelves have stamps, ink, paper, office supplies, etc.  I was using the dresser to keep my scrapbook paper in - each drawer a different color.  But it just isn't working out for me.  I need a better use for space here.  Plus my daughter needs a dresser - so this dresser will be moving up to her room.

Now we are facing the door and looking at the left corner.  There is a filing cabinet that is pretty much empty - it is supposed to be storing all of my papers that you see around this mess.  I keep my paints and books over here.

This next picture is of my "work" area.  Yes there are two computers in this area.  One is for my "real" job and the other I use for my blog and personal use.  My personal computer is the one with two screens (I love having two screens) and the laptop is for my "real" job.  And yes there are two printers - one for my job and one that is mine.  Papers everywhere, super disorganized.

And here is our last picture - Now facing the door.  A card table set up for my laptop/"real" job computer.  Can you spy the two cricut machines?  I need to make room for my third one.  I have a small white shelf (full of books).

A lot of this I use so I don't want to toss it - I just need to figure out a new organization system - because clearly mine isn't working. I am thinking of adding some shelving to the top of the walls?? One of my problems is that I am a very visual person - if it is out of site I forget I have it so I have a hard time putting something away that might get lost when I know I will need it.  Any suggestions?

  1. Oh my, I think you and I are long lost sisters or something. I feel your pain and was in your situation a couple of years ago. One thing I did was have a really good friend come over (one that wouldn't judge me for all of my messes) who is really a great organizer, one of those people that is as passionate about organizing as I am about crafting. We spent about 4 hours going through things and throwing out things that I didn't need, separating things that were alike and then finding a logical way of placing all my supplies. She even made me sharpen all my pencils then lay them all in the same direction in a basket in a drawer. That is how organized she was, right down to paper clips and thumb tacks. Long story short, call in someone to help you and stay with it until it is all done. One other thing that helped me was moving out of a 9'x9' bedroom into a 12'x16' room, what a difference that made! I am the first to admit that I am WAY more crafty than organized, even 'organizationally challenged' if you will. Good luck! I can't wait to see your progress.

    1. Thanks for your comment Connie! It is just overwhelming to figure out how to organize all of this stuff. I have a good friend that is super organized - maybe I will get her over here to help me. I think I am going to get some boxes to put "like" items in and toss stuff and once the space is a bit emptier it will be easier to organize. I know I can fit this all in here - I moved from a smaller space to this bigger space and the smaller space was super organized. This layout is just different and I just need to figure out how to make it work for me :) I can't wait to get to work and show the after pictures.

  2. Thank you for confirming I'm not alone! You are also way braver than me because I'm not posting my disaster area! I need to get it under control and that's on my to do list. I really do create better in chaos but I think I'm beyond that even. Ssssshhhh don't tell my husband I said that!

    1. No Carol you are not alone :) I can't believe I shared my craft room disaster on here but it is something I really need to get under control. I do create great in chaos but now it is to the point where I am struggling to create - so something must be done. And Carol your secret is safe with me!

  3. Summer, you just might be my hero! LOL My office looks very similar to yours, especially since the holidays were so crazy - like there was a Christmas explosion in there! But yet I still carve out tiny spaces to craft and work...seemingly ignoring the giant problem. Oh - and I'm quickly running out of floor space, as I have more and more "stuff" that needs a home. Sorry I have no solutions to offer, but I look forward to any solutions from others!

    1. Thanks Laura, glad I am not alone! :) I have been ignoring the giant problem way to long. I have started the clean up process. I am first making piles of similar items and tossing stuff I don't use or haven't used in forever. I may get this done a bit slowly but it will get done.

  5. Summer, I think your craft room and mine must be related -- they sure share a lot in common!

  6. I wish I had a room, all I have is a small space in our basement. Have you heard of the "workbox". They are super for organizing. I wish I had one and someday I will, until then I store a lot of my scrapbook and craft supplies in baskets and containers. I'm constantly reorganizing too. You can find them at theoriginalscrapbox.com
I have a six foot table as my workspace and a lot of supplies are stored underneath so I keep a sheet as a table cover and that way my supplies don't show but they are easy for me to get to.

    1. I used to have a much smaller space and I had it very organized. Then I moved into a bigger room and haven't quite figured out my organizational system so it is like a bomb went off. I have been working on it though and it is looking much better right now. Thanks for your suggestion of the Scrapbox. I have heard of it before and I think I really need to check it out.
